Oakton is located in the central Fairfax County area, at 38°52'59”N 77°17'24”W (38.883050, -77.289900).[4] Interstates 66 and Virginia State Route 123 cut through the area.
It is bordered by the city of Fairfax to the south, Fair Oaks to the west, Difficult Run to the northwest, Wolf Trap to the north, the town of Vienna to the east, and Merrifield to the southeast (city of Herndon can be found 10 miles to the North East). In total, Oakton has a 9.8-square-mile area (25.3 km2).
The 2000 census showed that Oakton had a population of 29,348, with 11,118 households and 7,649 families. This translates to a population density of 3,024.1 per square mile (1,167.6/km2), and there were 11,392 housing units with an average density of 1,173.9 per square mile (453.2/km2).
The racial makeup was 74.46% White, 5.79% African American, 0.20% Native American, 13.83% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.08% from other races, and 3.56% from two or more races. 9.65% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
32.7% of the households consisted of people with children under 18, 57.8% were married couples, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families.
Around 21.7% of all households were comprised of single individuals, and 3.8% had someone living alone aged 65 or older. The typical household size was 2.63, and the average family size was 3.08.
In terms of population age range, 23.3% were under 18, 7.7% were 18 to 24, 34.9% were 25 to 44, 26.6% were 45 to 64, and 7.5% were 65 or older. The median age was 36. For every 100 females, there were 97.5 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 95 males.
The median income for a household in Oakton was estimated at $167,512 in 2010, with the median income for a family at $188,308. Males had a median income of $111,856 compared to $73,254 for females.
